Afraid of committing to a lesson package or program?That's normal! ShiftPoint will work with you to add or even reduce the number of lessons to fit your skill level. ShiftPoint has designed its curriculum to fit the needs of the majority of our students. These are general guidelines that help structure our lessons and aid our customers in finding a good starting and ending point. Although these serve as a general guideline, they are not set in stone. We serve a variety of students of all ages and all skill levels; therefore, our curriculum varies from student to student.If a student picks up the "basics" fairly fast, it is not unusual for our instructors to push them to learn skills that are outlined in the higher-level curricula. Vise-versaIf a student finds certain skills challenging, our instructor will adjust to their needs, and the lessons are tailored to advance them at a comfortable and consistent pace.  Our end goal is to get you comfortable and confident.

Is learning to drive manual worth it?

Question 3

Why not just learn to drive manual from a friend?

Learning from someone who owns a manual car might seem easier but it’s not always the safest or most effective option.
No dual controls. If something goes wrong, there’s no instructor brake or clutch to prevent a mistake.
Higher stress for both people. Friends and family can get frustrated. That pressure makes learning harder.
Risk to their vehicle. Clutch wear, stalling, or sudden stops can cause unnecessary strain on a personal car.
No structured teaching method. Most people teach from habit, not a step-by-step system.
Limited real-world practice. You may only learn in one parking lot instead of progressing to hills, traffic, and real driving scenarios.

What does Behind-the-Wheel instruction consist of?

Depending on the lesson package purchased, our behind-the-wheel instructor will be tailored to fit the needs of each student, depending on their starting skill level and their desired goals.

Instructors will provide students with a variety of skill-building exercises that prepare them to either become skilled manual drivers or receive their drivers license, including but not limited to the following:

Can I get my driver's license with ShiftPoint?

Yes, you absolutely can get your license with ShiftPoint Driving School. We are officially a Third-Party Provider for ADOT, and we can issue Road Test Waivers to eligible students :)

Does your training vehicle have safety monitoring systems?

Accepted Answer

ShiftPoint's vehicles are equipped with GPS tracking and dual video monitoring, capturing both interior and exterior footage for enhanced safety and learning.

Our vehicles are also equipped with dual controls (accelerator, brake, and clutch). This increases learner confidence, reduces anxiety, and fosters faster skill development by creating a safe space for error.

What is ShiftPoint's cancellation and rescheduling policy?

This policy is for individuals who have paid and scheduled their lesson(s) but wish to cancel altogether.

Can my teen get their drivers permit through ShiftPoint?

Accepted Answer

No, we do not do driving permitting; in fact,  anyone under the age of 18 can take the test at home. You can find out more by visiting ADOT Permit Tests.

Question 9

Does ShiftPoint test students for their drivers license or do we have to test at ADOT?

Accepted Answer

Our priority is driver readiness-not pass rates.
Eligible students do not necessarily have to test at an ADOT/MVD office. ShiftPoint is an ADOT-authorized Third Party Driver License Training Provider, which allows us to provide qualifying driver training and administer the required road evaluation for eligible students.However, completing a ShiftPoint lesson package does not guarantee that a student will be approved to take their final evaluation with us or that they will pass it.AGAIN: Our priority is driver readiness-not pass rates.Before we allow a student to take their final evaluation, they must demonstrate through our curriculum and instructor evaluation that they are ready to safely operate a vehicle independently. If a student is not ready, we will not put them on a road test simply because they have completed their purchased lessons. Additional training may be recommended before they are permitted to test.We do this intentionally. We are not interested in chasing a 100% pass rate by only testing students we know will pass. We would rather have a student take additional lessons and become genuinely prepared than send an unprepared driver onto the road.A driver's license is more than a test result. It represents a person's ability to safely operate a vehicle without an instructor sitting beside them.Our promise is simple: We will prepare you to drive - not just prepare you to pass.

Question 10

Does my student have to hold their permit for six months before getting their license?

Yes. If your student is under 18, they generally must hold their learner’s permit for at least six months before becoming eligible for a driver’s license. Professional instruction through ShiftPoint does not eliminate this requirement.If your student turns 18 before completing the six-month period, the six-month requirement no longer applies.However, being eligible for a license does not necessarily mean a student is ready for one.Six months is a minimum eligibility requirement, not a measure of driving readiness. Some students may need significantly more time and practice to develop the skills, judgment, and confidence necessary to drive safely on their own.That is why ShiftPoint encourages parents to consider readiness, not just eligibility. A learner’s permit is valid for one year and can be renewed if additional time is needed.Our goal isn't to get your student licensed as quickly as possible. Our goal is to help them become ready to drive safely and independently.Eligibility gets you to the test. Readiness gets you on the road.

What is a class G license and what are the restrictions?

A Class G license is Arizona’s graduated driver license for drivers under 18 years old. It allows a teen to drive independently while placing additional restrictions on their driving during the first six months of licensure.Before receiving a Class G license, a teen generally must:Hold their instruction permit for at least six months.Complete the required supervised driving practice.Pass the required driving examination.Meet Arizona’s other licensing requirements.What are the Class G restrictions?For the first six months after receiving a Class G license, a teen driver:Cannot drive between midnight and 5:00 a.m., unless driving for a specific permitted purpose, such as employment, a school-sponsored activity, or a religious activity.Cannot drive with more than one passenger under 18 who is not an immediate family member, unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.Must comply with Arizona's hands-free law, which prohibits drivers from holding or supporting a wireless communication device while driving.These restrictions are designed to give newly licensed teen drivers time to gain experience while reducing some of the situations associated with increased crash risk.At ShiftPoint, we believe earning a license is only the beginning. Our goal is to help students develop the skills and judgment they need to use that license responsibly.

Does completing lessons with ShiftPoint effect my insurance rate?

It may, but ShiftPoint cannot guarantee an insurance discount.Many insurance companies offer discounts for completing an approved driver training program, but eligibility, discount amounts, and requirements vary by insurance company and policy. Completing ShiftPoint’s program does not automatically guarantee a lower premium.We recommend contacting your insurance agent before enrolling to ask whether they offer a driver-training discount and whether ShiftPoint’s program meets their requirements.Upon successful completion of the ShiftPoint driving program, your student will receive a certificate of completion that can be provided to your insurance company as documentation of their training.If your insurance company requires additional information or verification from ShiftPoint, we are happy to assist.We believe in being transparent: we can provide the training and documentation, but your insurance company determines whether a discount applies to your policy.

Do you recommend driver training programs that offer closed course work, uses a skid car, or driving simulation??

Absolutely!Although ShiftPoint does not currently offer closed-course training, skid-car exercises, or driving simulation, we still recommend these types of programs when they complement a student's overall driver training.We are not here to bash other driving schools or tell you that our approach is the only way to learn. Different programs offer different training experiences, and we believe there is value in as much quality training and preparation as possible.Our goal is simple: we want our students to become the safest and most prepared drivers they can be, regardless of their age, experience, or skill level.If a closed-course program, skid-car exercise, or simulator gives your student additional experience and helps them better understand vehicle control or emergency situations, we encourage it.We don't believe in limiting a driver's education to just one school or one method. More quality training means more opportunities to learn.

Do I have to pick up my student from your school?

No! Pickup and drop-off are included with ShiftPoint’s driving lessons.However, we strongly encourage parents to be present for both pickup and drop-off whenever possible. This allows you to briefly debrief with your instructor after the lesson, hear how your student is progressing, learn what they should practice, and ask any questions you may have.We also encourage training in areas your student is already familiar with. Learning to drive is challenging enough without adding an unfamiliar neighborhood or route to the equation. Practicing in familiar surroundings can help students become more comfortable and confident behind the wheel while they work on developing their skills.As your student progresses, we can gradually introduce new roads, traffic situations, and environments to help them become a more adaptable and independent driver.Pickup and drop-off are included. Parent involvement is encouraged. And wherever possible, we want your student learning in an environment where they can focus on becoming a better driver-not simply figuring out where they are.

Can a parent ride along for the on-road driving lesson?

No. Parents are not permitted to ride along during on-road driving lessons.We understand that parents want to see what their student is learning, but learning to drive can already be stressful for a new driver. Having a parent in the vehicle can sometimes add additional pressure or distractions, even when the parent has the best intentions.Our lessons are designed to give the student a focused, one-on-one learning environment where they can make mistakes, ask questions, and build confidence without feeling like they are being watched or judged.We still want parents to be involved in their student's progress. Upon request, parents can receive the available video footage from the vehicle's interior and exterior cameras to review the lesson and see what their student has been working on.This also allows parents to better understand what their student has learned and what they should continue practicing between professional lessons.Less pressure in the car. More focus on learning. More ways for parents to stay involved.

When should a student begin their driver training?

The best time to begin driver training is before your student feels completely ready. Starting early gives them time to build skills gradually, gain confidence, and develop safe driving habits without feeling rushed.For most new drivers, we recommend beginning professional instruction soon after receiving their learner’s permit. Early lessons can establish the fundamentals: vehicle control, steering, braking, turns, traffic awareness, and proper decision-making, before bad habits have a chance to develop.At ShiftPoint, we can also work with students at different stages of their training. Whether your student is just getting their permit, has already completed some practice with a parent, or is preparing for their Arizona driving test, we can tailor instruction to where they are now.The goal isn't simply to pass the test; it's to help your student become a safe, confident, independent driver.

If ShiftPoint is teaching my student to drive, why do they still need to practice with me?

Professional driving instruction is an important part of learning to drive, but a few lessons alone cannot provide the amount of real-world driving experience a new driver needs.Think of ShiftPoint as providing the instruction, structure, and professional feedback, while parent-supervised practice allows your student to repeatedly apply those skills. With continued practice, students can become more comfortable handling different roads, traffic conditions, speeds, intersections, weather, and everyday driving situations.This is also reflected in Arizona's licensing requirements. For a teen pursuing an Arizona Graduated Driver License, ADOT requires either 30 hours of supervised driving practice, including 10 hours at night, or 20 hours including 6 hours at night when the student qualifies under the alternative education pathway.The CDC also recommends that parents provide as many hours of supervised driving practice as possible over at least six months, including practice on different roads, at different times of day, and in different traffic and weather conditions. This is particularly important because crash risk is highest during a teen driver's first months of independent driving.Your role isn't to replace the instructor; it's to reinforce what your student is learning. ShiftPoint teaches the skills and provides professional guidance; your continued practice helps turn those skills into experience and confidence.
